Приложение А
SPRING
May Day. May 1st was an important day in the Middle Ages, the celebration of summer’s beginning. For that day people decorated houses and streets with branches of trees and flowers. In the very early morning young girls went to the fields and washed their faces with dew. They believed this made them beautiful for a year after that. Also on May Day the young men of each village tried to win prizes with their bows and arrows. People put up a striped maypole decorated with flowers and danced round it. Some English villages still have maypole dancing on May 1st.
SUMMER
AugustBankHoliday. Is the last Monday of August, the official day off (SummerBankHoliday). Usually people go out of town or to the sea. If the weather is good many families arrange picnics or invite guests to tea. Sea towns are also filled with “tourists” who come by cars, trains, buses, motorcycles and bicycles. Naturally these days, amusement parks, as well as various bars and pubs, earn extra profits. In amusement parks, visitors wear funny paper hats with humorous slogans like “Kiss me quickly” and eat the strangest mix of products you can only imagine. Also on this day there are horse races, as well as huge fairs with a competition for knocking down coconuts, a Panch and Judy show (a needle in the “ring” (a game that is subject to prizes by throwing rings at them) and many other entertainments.
AUTUMN
Halloween. Many Americans celebrate Halloween on October 31. Celebrations include costume parties and trick-or-treating. Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-workers. Adults may celebrate by watching horror films, holding costume parties or creating haunted houses or graveyards. Many children dress up in fancy costumes and visit other homes in the neighborhood. At each house, they demand sweets, snacks or a small gift. If they do not get this, they threaten to do some harm to the inhabitants of the house. This is known as playing ‘trick-or-treat’ and is supposed to happen in a friendly spirit, with no nasty or mean tricks being carried out. Some families carve lanterns with ‘scary’ faces out of pumpkins or other vegetables or decorate their homes and gardens in Halloween style.
WINTER
Christmas Day. Christmas Day on December 25, is one of the most festive Christian holidays in many countries around the world. It celebrates Jesus’ birth. Many homes have Christmas trees and other decorations in the weeks leading to Christmas Day. Some workplaces hold Christmas parties prior to December 25. Festive activities include exchanging presents, singing Christmas songs, going to parties. It’s a special time when children get presents from family, friends and Santa Claus, or Father Christmas. Christmas cards. Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries . Government offices, educational institutions, many businesses and post offices are closed on this day.
